Twelfth edition of the important biennial exhibition dedicated to architecture, and in particular to contemporary planning and experimental activity. Directed by Japanese architect Kazuyo Sejima, the first woman to direct the event, it will present a series of exhibits on the theme within the traditional exhibiting venues at the Gardens, the Arsenal and the historical centre of Venice, representing the 55 national contributors at this edition; amongst them Albania, Bahrain, Iran, Malaysia, Morocco and Rwanda will be participating for the first time.
Ailati. Reflections from the future is the theme at the Italian Pavilion of the Arsenal, organised by the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities together with PaBAAC - General Directorate for the landscape, the contemporary fine arts, architecture and art by Luca Molinari. Several collateral Events will be offered by international bodies and institutions, that will set up their own exhibitions and initiatives in various venues around town concurrently with the central one. Amongst the initiatives within this edition are a cycle of weekly conversations and meetings with architects, critics and personalities from the world of architecture, both national and international, developing over the entire exhibition period.
The Golden Lion to the Career will be awarded to Dutchman Rem Koolhaas, while the Golden Lion in Memoriam will be assigned to Japanese Kazuo Shinohara. On the occasion of the 12th Exhibition, three thematic online competitions, dedicated to photography, journalism, and video production will be announced through the networking website www.labiennalechannel.org.
